Growing Resilience and Responding to Challenges

SEC Alumni Grant recipient Camp Living Wonders (CLW), an organization that serves children with disabilities and their families, wanted to explore how to help parents and families cultivate resilience in their lives.

Challenge

The Covid-19 pandemic has exacted an incredible strain on parents and families of children with disabilities. In advance of their Winter Retreat, CLW turned to M² for help in developing a fuller and more colorful understanding of what resilience might mean, and support in applying this knowledge within their educational context. CLW families needed space to process the challenges they experienced, as well as skills to respond to challenges as they arise and to proactively nurture resilience.

Solution

M²’s discovery phase included preliminary research to thicken CLW’s understanding of resilience; finding and convening subject experts in resilience with diverse experiences and expertise, including disaster response experts, psychotherapists, and disabilities nonprofit executives; and creating a think tank with educators to apply the lessons learned to CLW’s educational contexts.Based on these learnings, M² created a curriculum “playbook” for CLW, which featured a report to clarify and deepen CLW’s understanding of resilience, a list of essential framing questions and concepts for the retreat, and programming ideas focused on growing resilience. CLW used the playbook to guide its Winter retreat.
